Adjudicator: John Fennell

John Fennell is a violinist and music director based in Auckland. He completed an Artist Diploma in Violin at the Conservatorium of Music Auckland and postgraduate degrees in music education and arts management. With a career spanning decades, John has captivated audiences worldwide as a soloist, orchestral, and chamber musician, including a Royal Command performance for Queen Elizabeth II.

John is the founding member and leader of the Starlight String Quartet, achieving over 2,000 performances and a nomination for Album of the Year at the New Zealand Music Awards.

John’s performances have earned critical acclaim and a devoted following. As a soloist or collaborator, he continues to inspire listeners.

John was Royal Court violinist and concertmaster of the Camerata Pasifika Ensemble of Soloists in Tonga (2007-2012) and was made a Commander of the Royal Household of Tonga for his services to music. He is the principal of the Auckland Violin Studio.

Entries open: 8th June. Closing date: 8th July 2024.

$10 per class, unless otherwise stated

$30 per competitor administration fee, per section

The administration fee includes: Entry into one section of the competition; family members enter free -no door charges; and additionally each family is automatically entitled to a WAPAC membership.

Prize money for general classes has been increased to 1st place $30; 2nd place $20, and 3rd place

$10.

Due to time restrictions overall, there may be a maximum number of entrants for each class; we advise teachers/ parents to get their entries in early so as to avoid disappointment, should the class be full

INSTRUMENTAL CONCERTO

Class 414 Violin Instrument Solo with Piano – (10 and under 18 years)

Entry fee $20

Prize Money 1st $150, 2nd $70, 3rd $30

1. The violin piece chosen is Henryk Wieniawski Romance from Violin Concerto No.2 Op.22

2. This class will be restricted to a minimum of 3 competitors and a maximum of 12 competitors.

3. If there are insufficient class competitors, the class will be canceled.
