Emma Sloman is an experienced and versatile soprano, teacher and performance workshop tutor.  She has studied singing in Auckland, London and New York and is a former Emerging Artist (2002) and was a Resident Artist for several years with NZ Opera, including chorus work for over twenty five years. With NZ Opera has performed many small roles including Glasha (Katya Kabanova), Ensemble and cover for Mrs Lovett (Sweeny Todd), Cousin, Mother, cover Cio Cio San (Madama Butterfly), Santuzza cover (Cavalleria Rusticana), Countess cover (Le Nozze di Figaro). Other roles include Adele (Le Comte Ory), Suor Angelica and Suor Genevive (Suor Angelica), Nedda (Pagliacci) for Canterbury Opera; Mimi (La Boheme) for Hawkes Bay Opera; Rosalinda (Die Fledermaus), Governess (The Turn of the Screw), Magda (The Consul), and Madame Silverklang (The Impressario) for Opera Factory and several other acclaimed chamber opera roles.  She has appeared as a soloist in concert with the Auckland Philharmonia, Bach Musica, Auckland Chamber Orchestra, Auckland Symphony Orchestra, Auckland Choral Society, Kiri te Kanawa backing ensembles, Rotorua Lakeside, Black Barn Hawkes Bay and is a sought-after performer for corporate and private events.  Emma has taught singing in several schools and has been the administrator and workshop tutor at Opera Factory for many years. She has enjoyed adjudicating for many Junior Vocal competition societies around the North Island and is thrilled to be back at WAPAC this year.

Entry Fees:

  • Enter the competition online from the 1st of August 2024.

  • $10 per class, unless otherwise stated.

  • $30 per competitor administration fee, per section.

The administration fee includes:

  • Entry into one section of the competition.

  • Family members enter free—no door charges.

  • Each family is automatically entitled to a WAPAC membership.

Prize Money (unless otherwise stated):

  • 1st place: $30

  • 2nd place: $20

  • 3rd place: $10

Age Reckoning: Age shall be reckoned as of 1st July 2024. Age must be stated on the entry form. WAPAC reserves the right to request a copy of a birth certificate or passport for proof of age.

Note: Pre-recorded instrumental backing tracks may be used for Class 281 only.

Due to time restrictions overall, there may be a maximum number of entrants for each class; we advise teachers/parents to get their entries in early to avoid disappointment should the class be full.

Vocal Festival Cup:
Awarded to the most impressive item in the vocal section.

Pae Tawhiti Award:
Two scholarships for singers showing particular promise for their future singing.
$250 each, to be awarded to their designated teacher on receipt of an invoice. Donated by Juan Kim.

Competitors must enter this class and classes 202, 203, 204, 205. The person with the highest marks wins the Arietta Trophy and $30.

211 VOCAL CHAMPIONSHIP – 10 and 11 years. $10 entry fee.
Competitors must enter this class and classes 212, 213, 214, 215. The person with the highest marks wins the Margo Roberts Trophy and $30.

221 VOCAL CHAMPIONSHIP – 12 and 13 years. $10 entry fee.
Competitors must enter this class and classes 222, 223, 224, 225. The person with the highest marks wins the Robert Freeman Memorial Cup and $30.

231 VOCAL CHAMPIONSHIP – 14 and 15 years. $10 entry fee.
Competitors must enter this class and classes 232, 233, 234, 235. The person with the highest marks wins the Vicki Martin Trophy and $30.

RECITAL CLASSES

261 RAMON OPIE MEMORIAL CUP RECITAL: 16 to 19 years. Entry fee $15
Ramon Opie QSM 1917-1995 was a prominent Auckland-based tenor who was a soloist for the NZ Opera Company, Auckland Choral Society, Grand Opera Society, and many others.

  • The recital must include three songs from three contrasting periods of your own choice.

  • Time limit: 15 mins

  • Prize money: 1st $80, 2nd $60, 3rd $30

271 WAPAC SENIOR VOCAL RECITAL: 20 to 25 years. Entry fee $15
Candidates must prepare a balanced programme of three songs. It must include Classical Aria, Lieder, or Art Song, and Own Choice.

  • A short introduction of no longer than one minute is to be presented prior to commencing.

  • Time limit: 15 mins

  • Semi-formal dress is required.

  • Prize Money: 1st $125, 2nd $75, 3rd $50

281 MUSICAL THEATRE 16 to 25 years. Entry Fee $15
Candidates must prepare two contrasting selections – In Costume. Songs will not be sung consecutively to ensure time for the costume change.

NB: Pre-recorded instrumental backing tracks may be used for Class 281 only. The competitor must supply their own recording and means of portable amplification. The competitor must be independent with setup and pack down and able to achieve setup in less than 2 minutes immediately prior to their performance. If the competitor is unable to achieve timely setup, they may forfeit their chance to perform. There will be no rehearsal.
